Night Markets

Although the Night Markets held on South Market Street and in the City Market only began in their current form in 2019, this popular event is not the only time the Market has extended its business hours into the evening. For example, in December of 1939 the Market was open until 10:30pm to accommodate farmers who brought their produce in for the Christmas season.[1] As notices in Saint John newspapers attest, the Market often stayed open late prior to major holidays such as Christmas and Easter to benefit both vendors and shoppers alike. 

In recent decades, the Market has extended its hours on occasion for visiting cruise ship passengers as well, a concession welcomed by market vendors. However, over the years both vendors and city residents have argued that the market should be open longer to allow working people more time to shop after work.[2]

Far from being a modern innovation, evening openings have been part of the City Market's story for generations, reflecting its enduring role as a place that adapts to the needs of native Saint Johners and visitors passing through.
